Zo. De balans is opgemaakt. Onder elkaar mijn favoriete tracks van 2009. In totaal 115 liedjes afkomstig uit verschillende genres; jazz, britpop, soul, dance, hiphop, rock, funk en world. Een kleurrijk geheel, al zeg ik het zelf. Naast fijne jazz van Eric Vloeimans, China Moses, Melody Gardot en Rob van de Wouw was er ook een hoop goede soul dit jaar; Tuomo, Jesse Dee, Mayer Hawthorne en bovenaan Lee Fields & The Expressions. Op het gebied van hiphop heb ik genoten van Mos Def, Q-Tip, Jay-Z en Typhoon. Ook de Nederlandse poprock bleef mij boeien met Awkward I en Coparck als hoogtepunten. Bossa Nova: The Essentials

De Bossa Nova bestaat vijftig jaar. Dat werd zowel vorig jaar als dit jaar in verschillende landen gevierd. Zo verschenen er veel heruitgaven van diverse Bossa Nova classics. Het genre, dat "een nieuwe tendens" betekent, is een mix van samba en jazz. Een aantal invloedrijke en interessante Braziliaanse artiesten van de afgelopen 50 jaar.

Antonio Carlos Jobim
De componist van 50 Bossa Nova klassiekers, waaronder het wereldberoemde 'The girl from Ipanema', volgens verschillende bronnen het meest opgenomen liedje na 'Yesterday' van The Beatles. Jobim vormde een team met schrijver en dichter Vinicius de Moraes. Tal van artiesten zongen (en zingen nog steeds) liedjes van het beroemde duo Jobim-de Moraes. In Rio de Janeiro is de luchthaven naar Jobim vernoemd: Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport.

Joao Gilberto
Joao Gilberto bracht de liedjes van Jobim naar een groot internationaal publiek. Hij gaf de songs, na jaren studie, een nieuwe interpretatie en ritme. Zo ook het beroemde 'Desafinado'. Gilberto wordt daarom de eigenlijke uitvinder van de Bossa Nova-stijl genoemd. Gilberto schreef ook eigen liedjes zoals 'Bim Bom', dat gezien wordt als het eerste officiele Bossa Nova-nummer. Miles Davis zei ooit over Joao Gilberto: "He could read a newspaper and sound good".

Elis Regina
Regina streed haar hele leven voor de rechten van musici. Qua stem, intensiteit en vanwege haar levenseinde wordt ze vergeleken met Janis Joplin. Regina overleed op 36-jarige leeftijd aan een overdosis cocaine, slaapmiddelen en alcohol. Alle drie de kinderen zijn muzikant geworden. Dochter Maria Rita is de laatste jaren een succesvol zangeres en houdt daarmee de Bossa Nova in leven.

Milton Nascimento
Eén van de iconen van de Braziliaanse muziek. Nascimento werkte met veel artiesten buiten Brazilie samen. In 1976, op zijn album Milton, doen Wayne Shorter en Herbie Hancock mee. En ook neemt ie platen op met Paul Simon, Pat Metheny, Duran Duran en James Taylor. Het album Clube da Esquina uit 1972 wordt min of meer gezien als zijn beroemdste werk. Daarop het geweldige 'Tudo o que voce podia ser'.

Sergio Mendes
Klassiek pianist die nog steeds erg actief is in de muziek. Werkte op jonge leeftijd met saxofonist Cannonball Adderley en Antonio Carlos Jobim. Later ook met Stevie Wonder en nieuwe bands als Black Eyed Peas. Mendes werd wereldberoemd vanwege zijn versie van 'Mas que nada', geschreven door Jorge Ben Jor.

Jorge Ben Jor
Zijn eerste artiestennaam was Jorge Ben. Later werd dit Jorge Ben Jor. Het zou een reactie zijn op een incident, waarbij een aantal royalties per ongeluk naar de Amerikaanse jazzgitarist George Benson gingen. Luistertip: Jorge Ben Jor - Taj Mahal

Gilberto Gil
Zanger en componist, en tevens voormalig Minister van Cultuur van Brazilie. Gil stond bekend vanwege zijn sociaal-kritische teksten. Dit werd door het militaire bewind in de jaren 60 gezien als "subversief", met als gevolg dat ie een tijdlang gevangen werd gezet. In de jaren 80 nam Gil, samen met Jimmy Cliff, een Portugese versie op van 'No woman, no cry'.

Astrud Gilberto
De zangeres van 'The girl from Ipanema'. Creed Taylor, de producer van dit nummer had het gevoel dat dit een hit kon worden. Maar dan zou het liedje wel wat Engelse tekst moeten krijgen, naast de Portugese tekst van Joao Gilberto. Gelukkig was Astrud, destijds de vrouw van Joao, aanwezig in de studio. Zonder enige ervaring als zangeres mocht ze het liedje spreek-zingen. Het bleek goed uit te pakken: er werden miljoenen exemplaren verkocht.

Al weken op mijn i-pod/in mijn cd-speler, maar tot op heden nog niet in mijn lijstje: Lee Fields. Op 5 komt Ladies nieuw binnen. Een andere nieuwkomer (op 10) is Mamadou Barry met het dansbare Africa Five, gebaseerd op de jazzclassic Take five. Juicebox komt het lijstje binnen met Chatterton. Het nummer staat op het onlangs verschenen 'Gainsnord', een verzamelaar waarop liedjes van Serge Gainsbourg worden vertolkt door Nederlandse en Belgische artiesten. De laatste nieuwe in het lijstje is Eric Vloeimans. De trompettist is terug met een nieuw album. De opzwepende openingstrack Maceo is nieuw binnen op 14.

Africa Rising!

Deze maand krijg je bij het tijdschrift Mojo een cd vol met Afrikaanse muziek, onder de noemer Africa Rising. In totaal dertien zogenoemde 'essential mindblowing summer grooves', waaronder twee gloednieuwe tracks van Tinariwen en Bassekou Kouyate, beide uit Mali.

Eerstgenoemde band werd drie jaar geleden terecht door werkelijk alles en iedereen de hemel in geprezen, vanwege hun album Amam iman: water is life. Een sfeervolle en vooral mysterieuze bluesplaat. Ook binnen de popmuziek bracht dit album wat teweeg. De band uit de Sahara vormde, volgens Coldplay-frontman Chris Martin, een grote inspiratiebron

voor hun recente album Viva La Vida. Luister hier naar de nieuwe track 'Tenhert'. Het hele album is te checken op de 3Voor12 Luisterpaal.

De andere nieuwe track is van Bassekou Kouyate, die intussen door het leven gaat als "De Jimi Hendrix van Mali''. Hij bespeelt de ngoni, een snaarinstrument waarvan je bijna in een soort trans raakt. Hij gaf ooit een fantastisch optreden bij Jools Holland en dat zag er zo uit. In september ligt I speak fula, Kouyate's nieuwe album, in de winkel.

Op Africa Rising staan verder beroemde Afrikaanse artiesten als Oumou Sangare, Tony Allen (ex-drummer van Fela Kuti) en Toumani Diabate. Maar er is ook aandacht voor nieuw talent waarvan Staff Benda Bilili uit Congo de nieuwste sensatie is. Kortom, koop deze maand Mojo en ontdek Afrika! Je zult er geen spijt van krijgen.

Zowel in de hiphop als in de dance is het gebruik van samples de normaalste zaak van de wereld. Het leukste is om deze samples te ontmaskeren. Waar halen ze het vandaan? Voor 'The Rockafeller Skank' gebruikte Fat Boy Slim de muziek van 'Sliced Tomatoes' uit 1972 van The Just Brothers. Check it out now!

SOULCLASSIC: Labi Siffre - The Vulture

Zanger Labi Siffre wordt vaak alleen nog maar herinnerd aan die ene popballad 'Something inside so strong', het protestlied tegen apartheid in Zuid-Afrika. Het was in 1987 een wereldwijde hit. Gevolg was dat Siffre vaak de boeken in ging als de zoveelste 'eendagsvlieg'. En dat terwijl de zanger, eind jaren 80, al een carrière van bijna 20 jaar achter de rug had. Zo is ie bijvoorbeeld de man die begin jaren 70 'It must be love' schreef, later door Madness gecoverd. Het lijkt erop dat een groot deel van zijn repertoire voor velen soms vergeten of überhaupt nooit ontdekt is. En dat is jammer voor iemand die geweldige soul- en funktracks heeft gemaakt en ook al enige tijd een grote inspiratiebron vormt voor de hiphopwereld. Kanye West leende de muziek van Siffre's 'My song' en Eminem gebruikte een sample uit 'I got the...' voor zijn hit 'My name is'. Luister hier naar 'The Vulture', afkomstig van het prachtige album 'Remember my song' uit 1975.

Festival IJAZZ 2009

Zondag 7 juni, IJ-JAZZ in Amsterdam. Het is bepaald niet warm, de lucht is grijs en de regen valt met bakken uit de lucht. Maar als eerst Gabriel Rios en daarna José James optreedt ben je dat alweer vergeten. Beide concerten speelde zich af in het Duvel Droomschip. Rios trad op met pianist Jeff Neve en bracht een mix van pop, jazz en latin. De openingstrack was meteen raak: een jazzversie van de Jimi Hendrix klassieker 'Voodoo Child'. Een ander hoogtepunt was het nummer 'Angelhead', de titelsong van Rios' laatste album. Na de Puertoricaan uit Gent was het de beurt aan de Amerikaanse zanger José James, die ik vorig jaar voor het eerst zag op het North Sea Jazz festival. Ook deze keer op IJ-Jazz gaf ie een fantastisch en inspirerend optreden. Naast het prachtige 'Love' en het hitgevoelige 'Park Bench People' speelde ze hun versie van het bekende 'Moanin' van Art Blakey. Na deze avond is er geen twijfel meer mogelijk; José James is dé sensatie op het gebied van jazz en hiphop.
