Soul Diggin' : Lost Grooves & Forgotten Gems

"Mother Nature gave us love, love, love, love, love, love. So that we would have something to share". (Mother Nature by Albert Jones)

As a record collector and music editor, living in Amsterdam, I spend a lot of time in record stores all around the world. Last years I visited small independent shops in L.A., San Francisco, Las Vegas, Cape Town, Berlin, New York and Barcelona - perfect places to find rare vinyl records. Those diggin’ adventures inspired me to start ’Soul Diggin’, a mixtape with lost grooves and forgotten soul-gems from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The opening track I selected is the rare original version of The Jackson Sisters ‘I Believe In Miracles’. Recorded in 1973 and performed by Mark Capanni, 14 months before the Jackson Sisters version hit the streets. Despite the Capanni version having been pressed up it failed to make an impact - too soulful for rock radio but not soulful enough for RnB radio - and the record was pulled. It was the Jackson Sisters with their full-on dance-floor funk that did the business, released in 1974.

A soul singer that is mad underrated is Mike James Kirkland. In 2010 John Legend released an album that includes a cover of his classic “Hang On In There,” which brought another deserved batch of new listeners to discover the work of Kirkland. Soul Diggin’ features his soulful version of Carole King’s ‘It’s Too Late’.

One of my favorite heartfelt soul anthems is called ‘You Keep Coming Back’ by 100% Pure Poison, a band formed in 1974 by nine American soldiers based in West Germany. During a period of leave, they popped down to Cannes in France to perform, were spotted by EMI Records, and were flown to London to record what turned out to be their only album, Coming Right At You.
